Plastic Conduit Systems:
Polyvinylchloride (PVC) has been the material of choice for electrical conduit, duct, tubing, fittings, and boxes for more than five decades to safely contain and protect power, telecommunications, utility, and signaling conductors and cabling.
PVC conduit, duct, and tubing provide years of maintenance-free performance in underground, concrete encased, and exposed applications and are installed in accordance with the NFPA70® National Electrical Code®, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code) and local Codes.
Advantages
PVC raceways and boxes offer a number of advantages including:
Rigid PVC conduit is available in schedule 40 and 80 and can be used exposed, direct buried, or encased. Duct is available in varying wall thicknesses categorized with different types such as, DB-60, DB-100, and DB-120 for direct burial and encased applications. Duct is also available in EB-20 and EB-35 for encased applications. Electrical Non-metallic Tubing (ENT), which is a flexible corrugated tubing, is used in direct buried and encased applications. Please refer to local Code requirements for applications permitted.
Electrical raceways, fittings, boxes, covers, and enclosures are certified, listed, labelled, and manufactured in accordance with a number of industry standards including:

Electrical PVC conduit and duct are commonly joined with solvent cement and primer. It is recommended to remove all sharp edges or burrs with a knife after cutting the raceway to length. After confirming a dry-fit, a generous amount of solvent cement is applied to the raceway outer diameter and fitting inner diameter. The raceway is slid inside the fitting and given a quarter turn, if possible, to ensure the solvent cement is spread evenly on the material surfaces. Allow the cement to cure as per manufacturer’s instructions to achieve a permanent joint.
PVC material will expand and contract in reaction to a temperature change. PVC conduit has a coefficient of linear expansion of 3.0 x 10-5 in./in./°F. Generally, a 100 ft. run of PVC conduit will undergo a change in length of 3.6 inches for every 100°F temperature change. It is important to know when to install an expansion joint and to know how to correctly install the expansion joint; therefore, it is recommended to consult the installation information provided by the manufacturer.
